Before Home

The hours after school can change everything

Studies show that children whose families are involved in their education do better in school than children whose families do not. We also know that children who can't read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school. For children and families living in poverty, that number jumps to six times. The hours between the final bell and bedtime are some of the most critical — and for many families in Lynn, they're also the most under-resourced.

Before Home changes that.

Before Home at The REAL Program is a place where children come for tutoring, playing, healthy snacks, reading, being outdoors, and all in a safe/nurturing environment that is more like a home than an institution.

Every afternoon, children from the Brickett School walk to our home at 17 Atlantic Street where they're met with experienced volunteer tutors, homework help, reading support, and a safe, literacy-rich environment designed to bridge the gap between classroom and home.

But Before Home isn't only about academics.

It's much more.

Students receive healthy snacks and hot meals every day, because children cannot learn on an empty stomach.

This nourishment fuels learning, receiving homework help, access to books, and opportunities to express themselves.

They grow in more than just grades -they build friendships and confidence, carrying them toward a brighter future for them and their community.

With context to our cradle-to-career literacy pathway, Before Home supports school-aged learners.

When children get consistent, caring support during the most vulnerable hours of the day, they don't just keep up — they catch up, build up, and show up ready to succeed.

Combined with Starting Small, REALSTREAM, Digital Literacy, ESL Classes for Adults, and our Little Free Libraries, Before Home ensures that no child in our community falls through the gap between school and home.

The REAL (Reading and Educational Assistance for Learning) Program's mission is to improve literacy in Lynn, Massachusetts.
