Summer Should Build Futures, Not Erase Progress

Every summer, low-income students lose up to two months of reading progress — a phenomenon researchers call the "summer slide." Year after year, those losses compound, widening the gap between kids with access to enrichment and kids without it. By middle school, summer learning loss alone can account for two-thirds of the achievement gap.

This is where REALSTREAM Summer Experience comes in.

For six weeks each summer, children ages 7–12 dive into a hands-on experience built around the STREAM model — Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts, and Math — all grounded in a foundation of literacy and community. Students don't just stay on track. They explore, create, and grow — through interactive workshops, creative sessions, and field trips to places like the Boston Public Garden and the Massachusetts Statehouse that open their eyes to what's possible beyond their neighborhood.

REALSTREAM is also a launchpad for the next generation of community leaders. REALSTREAM Summer interns join the team as mentors and chaperones, gaining hands-on experience while supporting the younger students who look up to them.

Every student receives breakfast, snacks, and lunch each day — because children cannot learn on an empty stomach.

For REALSTREAM participants and interns, it's mentorship in action — and it creates the kind of "pipeline story" that defines The REAL Program, where today's learners become tomorrow's leaders.

As part of our cradle-to-career literacy model, REALSTREAM fills a critical gap: the summer months when learning loss hits hardest and low-income families have the fewest options.

Alongside Starting Small, Before Home, Digital Literacy, ESL for Adults, and our Little Free Libraries, REALSTREAM ensures that literacy doesn't take a summer vacation — and neither does opportunity.

The REAL (Reading and Educational Assistance for Learning) Program's mission is to improve literacy in Lynn, Massachusetts.
