Why Lynn?

Underserved children in Lynn, MA need more access to books and educational assistance. The gateway City of Lynn has a population of nearly 100,000 people in 10.8 square miles.


  • There is one public library.

  • There are no bookstores.

  • Only 6 out of 22 public elementary schools have dedicated school libraries due to classroom overcrowding and budget reductions.

  • The average class size is 30 students.

  • Fifty percent of the children entering kindergarten have not had any formal education before they enter the public school system.


Families have limited access to affordable, high quality childcare and tutoring services. Coordinated support systems are needed to help parents, families and children throughout the region.

The REAL (Reading and Educational Assistance for Learning) Program's mission is to improve literacy in Lynn, Massachusetts.
